It's been an interesting year since I last blogged. A little detour with health issues - so boring I think. I have been watercolor-ing some spring flowers for several weeks then Spoonflower announced their new monthly challenge and it was watercolor!

I had put together several variations to be offered on fabric. Here is my design when I first started:

Then I painted some coordinating leaves and blooms:

I'll post a link when I get all my variations proofed, etc. I think I'll enter an aqua-scattered version.

Meet Cathy Pascoe. A Canadian artist who began with graphite and now works in coloured pencil. Talented to tips of her fingers, her work has been featured in Strokes of Genius 5 (see below).

For those who think of colored pencil only as a teacher's mark on a school test - wake up!

Coloured pencil is steadily gaining in popularity, fans, followers, and a widening circle of artists. Today's coloured pencils are made from a oil based or wax based or water-soluble pigmented core surrounded by wood. And that is just the beginning of the choices for coloured pencil now.

Coloured pencil artwork covers a wide assortment of materials. Artists have passionate views on the type of pencils they use. Some artists use strictly oil based brands while other artists have all types and brands on their tables. And about those tables - some artists swear by their heated tablets as a way to blend those colours. And then there are the solvents. The discussions can become slightly heated again about the use and type of solvents as a way to blend colours perfectly. All in an effort to share the methods. :)

Artist Cathy Pascoe shows her expertise in using her choice of materials within the coloured pencil spectrum. Cathy's work - especially her studies of glass, crystal, chrome or any subject with transparent or reflective surfaces - shows a stunning knowledge of her tools and her subjects. Her work is a masterclass of technique in coloured pencil.

I have spent most of my career as an elementary school teacher with my portraiture as an ongoing hobby. I am a self taught artist. Until five years ago, my work was only done in graphite pencil on paper. In 2005, I began using coloured pencils in my work. At the same time, I began to broaden my subject matter. My drawings are bright, vibrant pictures in coloured pencil, done in a realistic style. My work is presently being shown at the Centre for International Governance Innovation in Waterloo, the Voila Institute in Kitchener, the Sound Factory in Waterloo, the Quest Art School and Gallery in Midland and the Waterloo Uptown Gallery.
She hand sculpts these whimsical characters in papier mache / paper clay, plus oddments of dowels, etc. then paints them with bright and heart-warming colors. I'm guessing here but I suspect her of tapping a wand over their heads to give them that cheerfully alive expression.
Some of her figures are part of a small treasure box lid. To fill or not with jellybeans or candy corn or peppermints. You know you want one for your office desk. Or tuck one in among your teapot collection at home. Wherever you find a place, these are handmade, one of a kind art pieces. Not toys for children, make sure to put them where tiny hands can't reach!
At home with many home styles, Scrummy's designs are not gender specific either. I love the depth of design in all her work. No flat ordinary art here. Bold and vivid, her colour choices are rich and fun too. Her designs are intricate patterns that invite the viewer to come closer.

Having previously enjoyed artist Vickie Learner Adam's black and white graphic Pandas, I was wowed to discover this artist's full color illustrations/posters/prints painted in a very different style. Charming colorful butterflies, bears, cats, rabbits and more are absolutely perfect for a child's room. Filled with rich tones her work has just the right amount of detail to fascinate children (and parents).
"One fine day back in 2008, I was visiting a cooperative craft and art store in a neighboring town to pick up some of my items. They were raising the fees for the artists. I was almost out the door when another artist started to admire my Mother Goose posters. She was my favorite type of person...friendly and creative. She ended up buying a print from me and encouraging me to explore etsy. I was intrigued and went home to check out this etsy thing. I love beautiful fairy themed art. Like the Blue Fairy from Pinnochio (1940). Like Cicely Mary Barker. Like Pre-Raphaelite artists such as Waterhouse. Several years ago,I really enjoyed painting a few watercolors with friends' children as models. I think the only reason I haven't continued with this series is the difficulty of aquiring new models. (While in the grocery store: "Excuse me, could I borrow your seven-year-old tutu-wearing daughter?")

Hard to get more than a silent stare out of that conversation.

A convergence of pattern, lines, rich color and style, this artist is a master of all these things. And then she stirs in a cup of cats. You'll be saying more, please!

Building on the Japanese style of layers of pattern upon pattern, Brenda's work is a joy for your eyes. She works mainly with acrylics on paper. Many of us in the art community respect her skill and also the expertise and her grasp of the finer points of Japanese culture. Be aware that these image are larger than they are in reality but they stand up to a close-up look. Beautifully executed.

My work is heavily influenced by Japanese art, something my dad introduced to me when he was working for the Japanese ambassador in Winnipeg back in the '80s. I don't like to explore the dark side of life, I would rather bring a smile to your face when you look at my art. My work mainly consist of charming and cute vignettes of life, often featuring cats, and sometimes fantasy subjects. I work exclusively in acrylics, mostly on paper. My palette is bright, cheerful and makes use of a lot of pure metallic pigments. Quality and precision are two features of my work that I value highly, which is a nod to the Japanese aesthetic, and I want my work to look as good from two inches as it does from arm's length. Authenticity is another feature of my work - I am quite knowledgeable about Japanese art and culture, especially kimono, and there is often a surprisingly large amount of research that goes into even my smallest paintings.

It's the first day of the month. Which means you think about, even if you don't say aloud, the phrase "rabbit rabbit rabbit". Unless you live in the western half of the country. In which case you are convinced people just spout nonsense at times.

Years ago this was odd enough to me to make me investigate the custom. But I also think people are likely to spout nonsense. This view has since increased as the years go by.

The subject is rabbits. Funny how the subject in art evolves for every artist. Some artists decide they will paint primarily horses for instance. Presto, they are known as equine artists. Many artists will paint whatever a client requests, but for the most part an artist who is known for a specific subject will attract buyers in that same subject.

"Artists only paint thus and so because their soul needs it." Nice try, but artists for the most part, like to sell their work. At least once in a while.

When I was first earning my living as a graphic artist I found it difficult keeping my fine art separate from my work art. At least in my head.

Keeping that creative vision inside so that your work stays true to you can be extremely difficult. Especially when your client is telling you exactly how they want the piece to look. Customers tend to ask why can't it be drawn it like this? (Client pulls out a scrunched page from a magazine featuring art from ...xyz.) Really? Today with the benefit of years of art I would simply laugh as if they were making a joke.

But back to rabbits. In my opinion nothing can bring the artist to a comfortable balance like experience and time. Although for years I painted only people and thought of myself as a portrait painter - BD (before digital files). When someone asks me today to paint their pet I can appreciate it. And not feel fenced in by the subject. Even rabbits. Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit.
Carolynn McDade says her interest in art began about the same time as her interest in birds.

She remembers drawing portraits of her friends in elementary school and by the time she was 13 she was taking private art lessons. After raising a family in the Lake Michigan area, her interest in painting was rekindled when she started painting and selling birdhouses and ornaments in craft fairs.

Other than the early school art lessons, Carolynn considers herself an outsider in the art community.Without any formal training as an adult, she says her technique was developed by studying original paintings, books, and online videos .

She has enjoyed a wide audience by creating ACEOs and selling them. Through ebay art buyers Carolynn has sold these small art jewels to people all over the world. In case you were unsure what ACEO stands for : Art Cards Editions and Originals. This size of painting has to be exactly 2.5" x 3.5" to satisfy the definition of an ACEO demanded by collectors

Known for her watercolor paintings of birds, Carolynn has gained a following who prize these beautifully painted small format artworks. Including me!

Funny thing happened to me on my journey to world domination in the field of watercolor and colored pencil work.

I stumbled into a specialty custom fabric site called Spoonflower. I was fascinated by the possibility of creating my own design on fabric. After all, I had sewn and quilted all my life. And drawn and painted longer than that. Art and fabric, that is a perfect duo to me.

I drew very early. Picture a preschooler taking white shoe polish, the kind that had a felt dauber in the lid, and painting a mural on the walls of my closet. No doubt I had also ended up with white paint dots on my clothes in that closet. Luckily for me my mother was a painter and simply gave me art supplies in exchange for my shoe polish bottle.

I was amazed by what Spoonflower had to offer. I started reading every thing I could about fabric patterns and the mechanics of creating a seamless repeat. The first designs of mine were obviously at the kindergarten level of skill. I totally avoided the repeat problem by taking motifs of my animal art and isolating them on a solid background. :)

After a few of these simple patterns, I was reading everything about this seamless repeat business. Yes, I could find instruction online. But there were more than a couple of diverse methods. And some of them were confusing to me. Ok most.

So I figured out a method that worked for me and I dipped my toe in a higher skill set. I put together a scattered non-directional design of hedgehogs and pinecones. It was in a limited color palette. Spoonflower challenges are set weekly for fabric designers, and even after a couple of years I find the limited palette more difficult. Hex codes are given and the artist has no wiggle room for shading.

Full time artist Anna Vanover lives in Southern California with a husband, three poodles, three cats and one small chicken. Sounds like a description for a scene right out of 'Blast From The Past' doesn't it? But it's all fact and she describes it herself as a Leave It To Beaver neighborhood.

At an early age Anna knew she wanted to be an artist. She remembers being very young and drawing, drawing, drawing. Today she still is drawing and painting nearly every day - and loving it. Although she has tried many mediums she mostly works in oils or acrylics these days.

She spends most of her time working in commissions and her love of animals shows through her artwork. Dogs, cats, opossums, horses, mice, in fact a wide range of wildlife are all her subjects. Her work is bought by large companies and small and in many countries around the world. She has collaborated with musicians, filmmakers and authors and has had her work appear on several albums, books and DVD covers. Her work is incredibly diverse.
Anna also has a passion for creating miniature animals. These are a time-consuming labor of love. From sculpture to firing to adding fur strand by strand. These are tiny, tiny creations.

The artist behind these cats-sitting-like-chickens is Ginny Diezel, a sculptor who lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Her work obviously springs from a love for the whimsical. She had already taught French, studied and taught ballet when her son was born and she turned to scupture and painting to allow her to stay home with him. Beginning with painting rocks, then designing needlepoint canvases, she then moved to illustration and sculpture. If her work looks familiar it could be because she currently licenses her designs to several companies.

These cats are made from a form of papier mache called paperclay, an eco-friendly water based substance that requires no curing other than drying naturally. When dried, painted, and glazed the end result is nearly indistinguishable from pottery.

Aren't they too adorable? Many artists today (including me) have fallen in love with paperclay. Strong enough that it becomes it's own armature, it has gained a following among today's working sculptors.

You can see the advantage of sculpting in paperclay with this wonderful little cat-clown figure. Traditional pottery would be extremely fragile. And one of my favorite pieces from Ginny is this bird:
Every artist has preferences for some subjects over others. Some artists end up becoming expert specialists in a small range of subjects and/or only one medium and are very satisfied with that. I like to move back and forth between oils and watercolor, or use graphite or colored pencil. And sometimes even sculpt dolls. And although I like painting everything except landscapes I happen to be particularly drawn (no pun intended) to small animals and often anthropomorphize those little creatures in silly ways. Rabbits have regularly been targets of my skewed humor.

I think I have painted about half a dozen of these little buns dressed in lace collars. I especially like the spotty ones like this one. 'Spotty ones' being the technical rabbit term I am sure. The original watercolors were finished with colored pencil. They were 5" x 7" and some were 8" x 10". Although long sold some of these rabbit images are available now on ornaments, mugs, cards, and as prints at Zazzle.

This tortoise and hare were originally painted/sold in ACEO format, which means it was a miniature piece of art 3.5" x 2.5". This kimono wearing rabbit and also this shopkeeping rabbit and crow were also done in ACEO format. And a little lilac white rabbit. Just a few of my rabbits.
Again, watercolor and colored pencil.

As long as there has been the concept of art there have been two views about the work artists do. Many people pretend the whole art world is a mystery to them and that accomplished artists were just born with this natural gift. I have always had a problem with this concept. Art is simply the product of hard work by someone who wants to produce art. We start as children, all of us, with the same basic skills and artists practice their craft over and over and over. Some look at an artist's work they like and say to themselves they could never do that. What they don't see are the countless stacks of drawings or paintings that never made it past the rubbish bin. We artists often are asked 'how long did it take you to paint that?' My answer is in the neighborhood of 55 years.
2014 is the year of the horse.

Humans have drawn horses for over 16,000 years. Beginning with cave paintings until now. Come on, admit it, if you paint or draw or spend hours clipping animal topiary you have probably tried your hand with the subject of horses. I know I have. My horse art is hard to identify since my horses tend to look like dogs .

A much better artist with the subject is Gail H. Ragsdale. Originally from Santa Ynez, CA she now lives and paints in Tennessee, a state known for all things equine.

Her favorite mediums are charcoal, followed by graphite, acrylics, and watercolor. Gail studied art at California State University at Long Beach and privately with Donald R. Schwartz, an internationally recognized equine artist. Subjects of her work are Saddlebred horses, Friesians (wow - majestic animals), mules, cats, and more.

It is easy to recognize the familiarity of the fine points of a horse's anatomy in equine art. And not just from a textbook. A successful painter of horses is well served by a working knowledge of why this muscle goes here and how this juncture of bone structure works there. And it is visible in the work of Gail. H. Ragsdale.

You can see more of her work on Etsy, eBay, Zazzle. (Links are below).
People have been sending them for a little over a hundred years, but technology is changing many holiday traditions.

Getting those holiday cards in the mail when I was a child made that time of year magical. After all, they came with crystal glitter inside. At our house cards were attached to long ribbons and hung near the doorway to the kitchen. When the Christmas tree came down my mother gave me the cards to cut up for my craft projects.

I do hope it's a custom that sticks around. Such a tangible way to tell friends and family that you are thinking about them at the close of another year. And many still have glitter even if it is virtual.

Christmas cards began around 1850 when an English postal employee thought the idea would encourage more people to use the postal service. They truly became popular around 1900 as a result of Queen Victoria celebrating all things Christmas. Her husband Albert was German and he brought many customs with him such as the Christmas tree. Cards quickly became a trend not only in England but in the USA too.

Early Christmas cards were mostly printed in simple color separated motifs. Printing presses at the time allowed up to a four color process and using a block color theme cards were inexpensively produced. Black ink on white paper gave the appearance of two colors and with the addition of a plate of red ink became a Christmas color trend for many years.

This style reached it's peak of popularity in the 30's and even into the 40's. In many vintage cards the emergence of art deco design is visible.

Working on card design for the 2013 season, I tried to echo that discipline of 3 colors. It quickly became a fun challenge. You can see some of my results here:
When I first added a chicken to my calendar this year I had no idea how popular the barnyard variety of chickens would be. So I designed chicken fabric.

And so there are Christmas Shoe cards this year. At first I thought, shoes? And Christmas? But they are two wonderful things so why not pair them. (!)

Since these are virtual and fantasy they have the silliest flowers and ribbons and dots. But all very holiday-ish. If you are a shoe person, there is no doubt but that among your friends is another shoe person who would love one of these cards.

Perhaps this shoe-wish gene comes from an unfulfilled desire for that candy apple red patent leather pair of MaryJanes while growing up. But you can have one of these :)
Birds are so wonderful as symbols for winter. Owls with their snowsuits on and ski goggles in place. Although they are based on real birds I love to visually piece their feathers into owl quilts. Can't have them too real.

I can't quite see parrots or mockingbirds as Christmas card fare but someone very clever probably can and will. And then of course the little southern birds will looks as if they always belonged in December. Makes one think about those three French hens. Odd gift or maybe those were spectacularly feathered.

And here for those who love the fantasy side of birds are a few of my so-called goldersbirds. Nothing real at all except for the MaryJane shoes.
Impossibly sculptural cars, ships, women's clothing and dogs. I thumbed through old German collections of Art Deco advertising posters and although I had to guess at the meaning of the text, for the most part advertising is a global language. Our print ads are so predictable in comparison. After being suitably inspired I constructed card art of lines and boxes and circles and felt as if I had done my best to give a nod to that wonderful time in our art evolution. Here are just a few of mine that can be found at Zazzle (the link can be found to the right side of this page):
